Berain, Jean

Berain, Jean
(1639-1711)
   decorative designer, engraver, and ornamentalist
Born in saint-Mihiel into a noted family of 17th-century French designers and engravers (of which Jean, or Jean le Vieux as he is known, was the most brilliant), Jean Berain was commissioned to decorate the king's chamber in 1674, and he continued to design the sets and costumes for the carnivals, ballets, operas, spectacles, and ceremonies during the reign of louis XIV. The creator of interior decorations and tapestry cartoons (Tentures à grotesques, Triomphes marins) for the tapestry works of Beauvais, he had a notable influence also in Holland, England, and Germany (Berain style). Through his finesse, the elegance of his drawings, and his imaginative motifs, Berain augured the rococo style prevalent during the reign of louis XV.
